All About Battery Chargers
How well your batteries perform depends on how you use them and how carefully you charge them. That's why a decent battery charger is as important as the batteries you put into it.
And please note that investing in a quality charger is very important as we never give a thought to a battery charger and I have seen a lot of quality batteries being destroyed due to cheap charger and most of the time it’s the charger to blame than the rechargeable batteries.
1. How Many Types of Battery Chargers?
There are a lot of different types of battery charges for various type of batteries.
Depending on the battery chemistry, there are NiMH and NiCD battery chargers(to charge AA, AAA, C, D, and 9 volt NiMH and NiCD batteries), lithium battery charger(to charge 3.2V and 3.7V lithium batteries, like as 10440, 18650, 21700,32700).
Depending on the battery charger function, there are basic Battery charger, multifunctional charger, intelligent quick charger.
Depending on the quantity of battery charger slot, there are 2 slot, 4 slot, 8 slot and Multi-slot charger.
2. How Does a Battery Charger Work?
All battery chargers have one thing in common: they work by feeding an electric current through batteries for a period of time in the hope that the cells inside will hold on to some of the energy passing through them. That's roughly where the similarity between chargers begins and ends!
The cheapest, crudest chargers use either a constant voltage or constant current and apply that to the batteries until you switch them off. Forget, and you'll overcharge the batteries; take the charger off too soon and you won't charge them enough, so they'll run flat more quickly. Better chargers use a much lower, gentler "trickle" charge (maybe 3–5 percent of the battery's maximum rated current) for a much longer period of time.
3. How to Pick the Right Battery Charger?
It is important to choose the right charger for your battery. The right charger will make your battery function as safely and efficiently as possible. There are a few different factors that go into choosing a charger, for example: battery chemistry, charging voltage, charging current, sub-100% chargers, quality levels of chargers.
The most important things are to check that the voltage matches your battery and that the quality is of the level you want.
